Volleyball – Girls Varsity vs Taft School – Away
V Volleyball
The KO Varsity Volleyball team pulled off a spectacular comeback win against Taft, securing our first victory of the season 3-2 after going down 2-0 (19-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-11). In the first set, both teams got into a rhythm, scoring back-and-forth and turning the set into a competition of who could put up the most consistent passes and serve receives. A well-timed block in the middle by Genesis Frimpong ‘27 and a diving save in the center of the court by co-captain Alex Segal ‘25 helped the Wyverns dig into the battle that was to come. Despite some great plays, including a powerful kill down the middle from Katie Reale ‘26, the Wyvern offense was still building, and we lost the set. In the second set, Taft stepped up their serving and their aggression at the net, challenging KO’s defense considerably. Adaptive sets from co-captain Francesca Lamattina ‘25, solid passing in the back row from Lila Klinzmann ‘27, and varied attacks on the right side from co-captain Lola Peck ‘26 were not enough to stop Taft from taking the second set. The third set was a different story, with the Wyverns storming back onto the court, ready to prove their mettle and claw back into the game. Reale got the team going with relentless coverage and aggressive play at the net that won the first point of the set. From there, Lamattina’s sets and Chloe Delaire ‘27’s well-placed swings from the outside revived the Wyvern offense. Service runs from Peck at the beginning of the set, Segal in the middle, and Delaire at the end kept the opponent backpedaling as the Wyverns locked in for the rest of the game. KO took the third set with a decisive finish. In the fourth set, both teams really dug in to each point, and it was a battle for the lead. When she wasn’t crushing the ball down the line on the outside, Delaire had strong serve receive and passing in the back row, and Peck’s clever placement of down balls and pushes in the middle and on the right side made court coverage of KO’s attacks nearly impossible. On the service line, Delphine Lamattina ‘27 was a pillar of consistency. The points got longer as Taft responded with grit, but the Wyverns stuck with it and won the set with the momentum they needed for the deciding set, ending with a clobbered kill from Reale in the middle. The fifth and final set saw the Wyverns maintaining their positive mindset and gutsy court coverage to take an early lead. The team kept pushing ahead, with all pistons of offense and defense firing, to make it to the changeover with an 8-4 lead. Taft nearly closed the gap, but KO combined scrappy defense with consistent pressure on offense to win the final set 15-11. What a performance! What a game!
