Varsity Volleyball vs Marianapolis Preparatory School – Home

V Volleyball

It was a special night for the Varsity Volleyball team to play in front of a home crowd for our Dig Pink game, raising money for research and treatment of metastatic breast cancer through the Side-Out Foundation.

A great crowd showed up to cheer on the team and support an important cause through donations and a raffle, all while decked out in pink attire.

The match itself started out with a strong start from the Wyverns. Lola Peck ‘26 began with an ace to put us on the board, and continued to serve consistently and cleverly throughout the set. Co-captain Keira Sullivan ‘23 got the defense going with an early monolithic block that she then followed up with carefully crafted hits to the sidelines from the outside. Co-captain Jill Plaut ‘23 took advantage of an opening on Marianapolis’s side of the court to launch a push into the corner, which landed right in front of KO’s student section and instantly got the crowd fired up. In another moment of improvisation, Ava Cashman ‘24 pulled off a bonkers back-set over the net to save a key point mid-game as Marianpolis was closing on KO’s lead. The Wyverns eventually thwarted the opponent’s climb up the scoreboard, and with some immaculate first passing from Allie Arcaro ‘24 we were able to take the first set 25-18.

If you’re an avid reader of these sports wraps, you’ll know that the Wyverns have made a habit of rising to the occasion in high pressure situations, and the second set was no exception. Cashman started off the set with a one-armed save that Sullivan finished off with an ungettable tip, and the rest of the team was ready to maintain that high standard of play. Quin Kearney ‘23 was finding all of the right openings with her right side hits, and on defense she had stalwart coverage of tips and blocks coming at us. Peck continued with her unreadable serves for more aces and a major lead for the Wyverns. In the middle, Jillian Alexander ‘24 reached impossible heights to tip the ball decidedly into the open court. It was a spectacular offensive display, and the Wyverns took the set 25-12.

In the third set, Marianapolis brought their “A” game to put the pressure on KO. After a phenomenal early block by Alexander and Sullivan and some longer points, Marianapolis pulled ahead with a commanding lead. Lila Klinzmann ‘27 got our offense going again with high and reliable sets and some unbelievable passing saves that kept the defense alive. Cashman supplemented these efforts with cross-court hits that dropped devastatingly into the opponent’s court, but eventually Marianapolis took the third set 25-13.

The fourth and final set saw a resurgence of KO’s consistency on offense. On the service line, Kearney had a major run to put KO in the lead, forcing a timeout from the opponent (which is becoming a bit of a pattern when Quin is serving!). Arcaro followed suit in the middle of the set with a monster service run that put KO in winning position. Alexander and Sullivan led the hitting offensive from the middle and outside, and Alex Segal ‘25 was a defensive powerhouse as she made great saving passes near the end of the set. We won the set 25-9. The Wyverns held strong and pulled off a great win on such a meaningful night for everyone. Great work on and off the court, KOVB!
