Soccer – Girls JV vs Canterbury School – Away
JV Girls Soccer
Hoping to secure their first win of the season, the KO JV girls soccer team traveled to New Milford to take on Canterbury on an overcast chilly fall day. The Wyverns dominated the field, working swiftly to mount an offensive attack they maintained throughout the duration of the game, and when the whistle blew at the end, the Wyverns earned an impressive 6-2 victory.
Though most of their early shots went wide or to the keeper, the starting KO offensive and midline players were able to get numerous shots off. Finding the back of the net twelve minutes into the game, Maya Gerrits released a ball outside of the box that sailed over the keeper, boosting confidence in our ability to score. Less than a minute later, Liv Pilecki found the back of the net as well.
With a 2-0 lead, a lineup change saw many new Wyverns on the field gaining valuable minutes and experience. After being on the field for only ten seconds, Eden Gonzalez got the ball and took a shot on goal that nearly missed. Later in the first half, she carried the ball up the field, working around the opponent’s mid and defensive players, to execute an amazing cross to Maya Gerrits who kicked the ball past the keeper earning herself a second goal. The Canterbury Saints did catch us off guard in our box resulting in a goal. However, Ida Chapman and Bella Deurloo kept up immense pressure at the other end of the field, rifling many beautiful shots at the Canterbury keeper and making her work for every save. Right before the end of the first half, Bella kicked a ball that hit the crossbar and was unfortunately scooped up before our Wyverns could get to it.
In the second half, Sam Almeida came out of net and Eva Penta put gloves on to scoop up and stop all but one shot that Canterbury scored early in the second half. Eva successfully held the Saints to only 2 goals in her second game as goalie for the Wyverns.
Also protecting our Wyvern goal, defenders Tramy Phan, Ella Chen and Meagan Rose all quickly and aggressively stopped attacks and Camilla Jordan lent her speed to the back line, chasing down and thwarting many breakaway attacks giving Clara Toomey, who had previously done the same, a chance to move up to midfield. Elsa Zhuta, Deliah Mathews, Isabella Tippner, and Noa Taback, who assisted on a goal, all worked hard in the midline allowing Ida Chapman, who masterfully anchored center mid in the first half, a well-earned break in the second to nurse an injury. Our defense did an amazing job throughout the game, with many powerful kicks by Reagan Heafey-De Angelis allowing our team to remain on the offensive.
While our defense and mid players worked to prevent attacks, our offense was still hard at work wearing down Canterbury at the other end of the field. Liv Polecki dominated as a forward assisting in two goals. On a run at the opponent’s goal, Liv took a shot that was deflected across the box to where Sam Almeida slammed the ball into the net after making a stellar run at the back post. Ten minutes later, Liv made a beautiful cross to Bella Deurloo, who made scoring look easy, as she expertly placed the ball over the line.
Rotating the Wyverns around the field, saw Abbie Schiff and Margaret Miller as forwards who both put pressure on the keeper with several shots each and a goal from Margaret who scored the final point for the Wyverns.
In a great show of camaraderie, the Wyverns and the Saints socialized after the game and shared oranges and homemade cookies provided by our host.
