Middle School Girls’ Soccer vs Renbrook School – Away
MS Girls Soccer
This past Friday afternoon the MS Girls’ soccer team took the short bus ride down Trout Brook to The Renbrook School for the ‘West Hartford Derby’.
The Wyverns of Kingswood Oxford have been on the winning side of this rivalry of late, defeating Renbrook twelve games in a row. But as noted in last week’s game recap, the Wyverns are a new and young team so they hadn’t yet tasted the intensity of this match up before. And to complicate matters, the game was being played on Renbrook’s upper field which is smaller in size and condenses the game, giving Renbrook a distinct ‘home court’ advantage. The game went exactly as many of the pundits predicted; it was very difficult for either team to keep any possession because of the small spaces created by the field dimensions. That didn’t stop Form 2 student, Ida Chapman, from scoring a fantastic first half goal (her fourth of the young season) to give the Wyverns the early lead. Renbrook responded late in the first half with the equalizer. The second half went similarly to the first, neither team creating too many chances at the net. With about 8 minutes left in the game, Form 1’s very own Eden Rodriguez raced down the sideline weaving in and out of the defense. She found herself right in front of the goalie when the ball was finally knocked loose. After a fortunate bounce or two, the ball fell to Upper Prep forward Lauren Kocay. She tapped it in for the lead. The Wyverns then buckled down their defense which was anchored by Upper Prep’s Amelia Cicchiello and Form 2 students Anna Rossi and Molly Wiggenhauser as well as goalies Sarah Balog (Form 2) and Eliana Gauvin (Upper Prep). The clock finally ticked down to 0 and the girls erupted with cheers because they knew that they had earned a hard-fought win at a tough place to get W’s. The Wyverns are now 2-0 and play Renbrook again next week on Hewitt Day, but it’s at our place this time!
