A Decade of Harmony: The Camp KO Downbeats’ Journey in A Cappella Excellence

Since its inception in 2013, Camp KO’s A Cappella program has been a cornerstone of our summer offerings, reflecting Kingswood Oxford’s rich tradition in vocal excellence. The ensemble, affectionately known as the Camp KO Downbeats, was established in that inaugural year and has become a beloved institution ever since.

At the heart of this program is David Baker ’04, a dedicated Kingswood Oxford faculty member whose passion for a cappella music traces back to his college days. Beyond his role as a history teacher and track coach, David has been instrumental in nurturing young vocal talent each summer. His connections with professional a cappella artists, audio producers, and videographers provide campers with unparalleled opportunities to produce high-quality music videos and deliver captivating live performances.

Complementing David’s leadership is Andrew Kim, a professional a cappella singer, arranger, and producer based in New York City. Andrew’s extensive experience includes founding and directing the acclaimed group Backtrack Vocals, with performances at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and appearances on platforms such as the Steve Harvey Show. His expertise enriches the Camp KO A Cappella experience, offering campers insights into both performance and production aspects of the art form.

A unique aspect of the Downbeats is the involvement of former campers who return as counselors. These individuals, now accomplished singers in their own right, bridge the gap between instructors and current campers, fostering a supportive environment where young vocalists can thrive.

The program’s impact extends beyond musical development. Campers learn the importance of every voice, build confidence through solo auditions, and cultivate a culture of mutual support. The bonds formed within the Downbeats are profound, with many alumni maintaining connections long after their camp experience concludes.

Participating in a cappella singing offers numerous benefits, including enhancing musical skills, fostering teamwork, and promoting personal growth. Engaging in this art form helps campers develop discipline, resilience, and a sense of community, all of which are valuable traits as they mature into adulthood.

For those interested in joining, the Camp KO A Cappella program offers immersive sessions designed for students entering grades 5-10 July 28-August 1 and August 4-8. These sessions promise a comprehensive and enriching experience in the world of a cappella music. Learn more here and you can view last year’s music video here.

Join us this summer to be part of the Camp KO Downbeats tradition, where music, camaraderie, and personal growth harmoniously converge.
