The Power of Summer Camps in Shaping Future Leaders
At Camp KO, we believe that summer camp isn’t just about fun—it’s about growth, responsibility, and leadership. Over the years, we’ve cultivated a unique path for our campers to transition from participants to mentors, guiding them through roles as Counselors-in-Training (CITs), volunteers, and eventually paid staff. This progression not only builds practical skills but also fosters confidence, teamwork, and a strong sense of community.
Here’s how Camp KO shapes future leaders:
Step 1: Counselors-in-Training (CITs)
For rising 9th graders, the journey begins with our CIT program. These young leaders learn the basics of teaching and leadership by breaking down skills into manageable steps and understanding how to effectively communicate with younger campers. Their responsibilities include:
-
Walking campers to and from the cafeteria, nurse’s station, or restrooms.
-
Assisting instructors with setting up and cleaning their spaces.
-
Shadowing and supporting instructors in their sessions.
CITs complete an online application, participate in an interview with the Camp Director or Assistant Director, and undergo online Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) training before the season begins. They also attend our pre-camp staff training session to prepare for their roles.
Step 2: Volunteer Positions
Students entering grades 10 and 11 who have prior camp experience can apply for volunteer roles. These positions are perfect for those ready to take on more responsibilities and gain hands-on teaching experience. Volunteers receive 40 hours of community service per week and play an integral part in their assigned programs.
Responsibilities include:
-
Working directly with younger campers to teach specific skills and lead exercises.
-
Designing teaching modules under the supervision of a lead instructor.
-
Helping to manage the day-to-day operations of their assigned program.
Volunteers gain valuable experience while learning to lead, mentor, and collaborate with both peers and younger campers.
Step 3: Paid Staff Roles
Students who are entering or graduating seniors and have volunteered previously are eligible to apply for paid positions for a specific program or as a part of our logistics team.. These staff members take on more independent roles, acting as leaders within the camp.
Responsibilities may include:
-
Managing a group of campers independently while following curriculum guidelines designed by the lead instructor.
-
Leading daily fitness and yoga sessions under the guidance of the fitness director.
-
Teaching core skills and creating a supportive environment for campers to thrive.
-
Coordinating the lunch service and the set up of athletic fields and equipment
-
Photography and videography of camp activities
Paid staff positions are a culmination of years of development and dedication, offering students a chance to give back to the camp while refining their professional and leadership skills.
A Success Story: Jack Clonan
Jack Clonan’s journey at Camp KO is a shining example of how this program fosters growth and leadership. Starting as a camper in robotics during Camp KO’s inaugural year, Jack transitioned to a CIT, assisting with the robotics program. He continued as a volunteer in robotics and 3D printing, inspired by his mentor, Jeff Carpenter, Camp KO’s lead instructor for these programs.
Jack’s experiences at Camp KO motivated him to pursue a degree in technology education. During college, he returned as a paid counselor, co-managing the robotics program alongside Jeff. After graduating and beginning his teaching career, Jack returned to Camp KO to launch our screenwriting and filmmaking program, which he led with incredible success.
While Jack won’t be with us this summer as he focuses on developing curriculum for his school, his impact on Camp KO remains a testament to how camp shapes future leaders. We’re confident Jack will return in the future to inspire the next generation of campers.
Building Future Leaders at Camp KO
The progression from camper to CIT, volunteer, and paid staff creates a meaningful pathway for young leaders to develop critical skills, form lasting connections, and inspire others. At Camp KO, we’re proud to offer an environment where campers grow into mentors and role models, shaping not only their futures but also the future of our community.
If your child is ready to embark on this journey of leadership, there’s no better place to start than Camp KO.
